The value of a theological education
THE VALUE OF A THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION FOR MINISTERS
“All I need is the call of God and position myself
for God to lead me”, these are words we become accustomed to in Christian
circle, and when God calls, He provides; He makes way, and with faith we will
succeed. This kind of reasoning often leads to self-appointed titles,
ministers, establishment of new congregations, coupled the theology of
elevation and all without any desire to seek proper theological education. In
this essay I will argue for the need for theological education for ministers
and show some areas in ministry where it is invaluable. The use of masculine in
this paper does not limit its application to men, beware.
In any country to practice in a field, law, medicine,
nursing, etc.…there are requirements to satisfy, there are rules and
regulations to abide by, board to be a member, not less important among them is
the schooling, the necessary education to qualify someone. Only in ministry,
maybe, one can skip the educational part and still qualify, this nonetheless
does not diminish the need and value of formal theological education for
Christian ministers. While one may have some degree of success in skipping
formal education in ministry, depending on what metric is used for the
evaluation, the risk is too great, and ministers do at their own peril. No
surgery is performed by an apprentice, no building is erected by a cab driver, no
new medicine or scientific solution discovered other by a scientist, why is it
different in ministry?
Theological education is important for evangelical
ministers because it helps them understand their faith, God and the Christian
way of life better. It enables them to understand the Scriptures in more depth
and assists them in their ministry work. Theological education has the power to
transform the life of the evangelical minister so that he is better equipped to
lead, teach and interact with others in all areas of life.
For evangelical Christians‚ a fundamental reason for
the Christian minister to have a theological education is that a theological
education lays a foundation for understanding and interpretation of the Bible
for ministers of any church․
In a world filled with competing distractions and arguments‚ one must be able to know and
communicate God's message as contained in Scripture if one is to be faithful․ Those called to preach
must be exceedingly prepared in the Scriptures if they are to defend the
orthodox positions (2Tim 2:15)․
A knowledge of Scripture also enables Christian leaders to lead with confidence‚ beneficial not just to their own
spiritual life‚
but also to their ability to teach that life to others‚ and therefore to promote the
gospel on earth․
What
follow are the various areas that prove the importance of a theological
education.
FOUNDATION FOR BIBLICAL KNOWLEDGE
A primary purpose of theological education is to
prepare ministers for effective spiritual leadership. To communicate the
Christian message with clarity and integrity, ministers require a thorough
knowledge of Scripture. This preparation includes understanding the Bible as a unified
work, the processes by which it was composed, its historical contexts, major
theological perspectives, and sound principles of exegesis. Such study equips
evangelical ministers to interpret Scripture with greater depth and apply its
teachings faithfully to contemporary life.
When one is called to be a minister‚ he is called to minister to their
people․ One is called to lead‚ comfort‚ guide‚ and help the growth of their
people and of their faith․
Theological education for ministers equips them to represent the virtues and
attitudes of servant leadership‚
in the way of Jesus‚
with humility‚
integrity‚
and love․ It also offers
training and experience in pastoral care‚
mediation and conflict resolution‚
community building‚
and other aspects of leadership that embolden and equip ministers to be leaders
who serve and shepherd the people of God entrusted to their care by
transforming lives and communities in Jesus' name․
A minister who has received a good biblical foundation can
engage in his surroundings. He can interpret trends in society, can see needs
in his community, and find ways to spread the Good News in his context. With a
biblical worldview, the minister of the church can view every situation through
the eyes of his faith. With such a worldview he will do and decide things that
have a positive impact in and on the local community and in the world at large.
Another area showing the importance of a theological
education is in
DEVELOPMENT OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP
Strong theological education also shapes a
minister's relationship to the culture in which he is called to serve: in our
day‚ diverse‚ fast-paced‚ and often skeptical of the traditional practices of
religion․ Theologically trained
ministers are able to reflect biblically on the contemporary contexts within
which they serve‚
and frame questions of social justice‚
family‚ business ethics and many other
issues that impact the lives of their congregations within the clear and
gracious articulation of the Gospel's distinctive voice‚ in ways that connect
faith with everyday life and show the relevance of the Gospel to every sphere
of human experience․
The modern church context is characterized by a
variety of different educational and social contexts and thus demands that
ministers are able to function within a variety of situations. Thus, ministers
in multicultural and other contexts are able to be leaders in a manner that
enables them to engage with a variety of situations that enable them to be of
service in a variety of contexts and to draw together people from very
different backgrounds in order to form together as a church community.
As the evangelical church engages in a conversation
about the evolving needs of ministry within the modern societal landscape, the
transformative power of theological education upon spiritual leadership is
seen. Not only will an evangelical minister’s theological understanding inform
their view upon the various aspects of the Christian faith and associated
doctrines, but they will also clearly see their role amongst the communities
which they serve. Leadership that reflects the image of Christ serves a community
who recognize their need of God’s saving grace.
CULTURAL RELEVANCE IN MINISTRY
The effects of theological education go well beyond
the individual minister‚ and have a meaningful impact on the spiritual health
and growth of the entire congregation․ Well-trained pastors who have a
thorough understanding of Scripture and theology can help their churches grow․ The point of this
growth‚ however‚ is not for numerical growth but
rather the congregation as a community focused on God‚ Christ‚ and their mission․ By preaching and
teaching the Bible with depth‚
perception‚
and dare I say it‚
scholarly acumen‚
a pastor who knows and loves God's Word can get people to love God and his Word
better and make a concerted effort at discipleship and evangelism‚ thus creating a living and active
faith‚ a dynamic church‚ and an outreach to the community․
IMPACT ON CONGREGATIONAL GROWTH
In conclusion then‚ from an evangelical perspective‚
the importance of theological education for Christian ministers cannot be
overstated‚ as theological education represents biblical knowledge‚ the
foundational skill for understanding and interpreting the Word of God․ It also grows
spiritual leaders and helps ministers interact in earnest with the culture in
which they are placed․
Such training transforms congregations and enables churches to thrive․ The world sorely needs
the hope and truth that Jesus Christ came to offer․ Strong‚ sound‚ biblical training will prepare
ministers to evangelize and teach the world around them․ Investing in
theological education is an investment in the future of the Church and the
spread of the Gospel in today's world․
